Rio (no-spoilers)

Rio is easily hands down the best animated film of this year at this point! Rio dazzles and delivers the goods for all viewers old and young. This is definately a film you must take your family to. After a year that brought us Rango and Hop it is a nice treat to see a family film that actually entertains the audience from start to finish.

Here is a quick plot summary;'Rio' is a 3-D animation feature from the makers of the 'Ice Age' films. Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there's another -- and that she's a she -- he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio. But it's far from love at first sight between the domesticated and flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life's many wonders. 'Rio' brings together a menagerie of vivid characters, a heart-warming story, colorful backdrops, energizing Latin and contemporary music, and family-friendly song and dance." source moviefone.com

This film is full with beautiful colors and scenery that make the animation all that much beautiful! The voice casting is spot on with Jesse Eisenberg starring as Blu and Anne Hathaway as Jewel. The supporting cast is even better and they recognize that by putting up the voice actors in the opening scene just so you know what voice to look for. Standing out of the pack are Will-I-Am and Jamie Foxx as Pedro and Nico that brought not only their voice talents but their musical ones as well! The villain in this film "Nigel the white bird" is also very fun to watch as well  a character that leaves his footprint on this film and makes this movie that much more special. When the movie ended; the audience we watched the film with actually clapped for it! This is so special to see this happen because rarely films have such a responce from a audience after watching a film they like. Rio absolutely deserves the standing ovation!

Scream 4(spoiler heavy)

Scream is back! After over a decade of countless torcher porn films; Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson deliver a solid update of todays slasher flick that most of us grew up on! This film is filled with everything fans scream fans loved about the first one and filled with today,s hipness! It is hard to review this film without diving into spoilers so lets jump into it!

The beginning of this film has the beginning in which someone dies like the first three to set up for the movie but in this take it has three opening sequences that really show the tone of the movie. The first two are movies within a movie that mockingly make fun of the whole beginning sequence by trying to make it more current; "the facebook killer" for example. This then trails into the third scenario where it is actually happening with teenagers in Woodsboro. For this film to be what i was hoping it would be; it really needed to tone down on the comedy factor and really get into caring about the characters getting killed in the movie. The beginning basically spelled out to me that they were going to try and incorporate the new technology into this film that was not there for the previous movies and also play into the audience,s funnier side. I really hoped for one of the original castmates to get killed in the title sequence to show that this movie could go anywhere.

Without diving into every little detail; I will just give you my critique of the key plot points and spoilers. Basically this film seemed to be a original cast vs the new wave in a way. They had Dewey, Gale and Sidney back as murders were happening again around them. A whole new cast of teenagers for ghostface to kill that seemed very similar to the characters of the first film. They tried to make everything very retro and hip to the original which they needed to do but it seemed at times they tried to hard. For example the guy with the camera on his head; seriously who would actually do that all day? Hayden Panetierre's character was the highlight of the whole new cast and she died at the end along with all the new characters they introduced. It was kind of a shame that of all the characters to survive the movie that it was the originals:( and a creepy femalae deputy. But without further or do; the killers are Charlie and Sidney,s cousin Jill; played by Rory Culkin and Emma Roberts! This reveal to me was pretty good and well deserved. They played it off like the first movie at a house with Jill stabbing Charlie to make it look they were going to be the soul survivors and then Jill tells Charlie that its better if theres only one survivor and kills him. She then turns to Sidney that she wants to be her and then kills Sidney. After this she stabs herself and basically beats the shit out of herself to make it look like she was the soul survivor and make it look like her boyfriend was the killer. Which by the way throughout the whole movie they made it seemed like it was going to be the boyfriend again but it definately seemed like that it would have been to obvious. Jill then wakes up in the hospital to Dewey telling her that Sidney was actually still alive. Jill then finds her way to Sid,s room and thats where it ends at the hospital with Jill getting killed by Sidney. This all played out very well and I really liked the make-up job to make Jill look scary at the hospital in the end. She had this look of a cross between crazy chick and Regan from the Exorcist! Overall the killers were way better than the previous two films killer reveal! But maybe next time shake things up and give us one reveal midway through the movie and play off that the audience knows who it is. In one of the opening sequence,s there was scence in which there were two ghostfaces working together and I thought that would have been a good oppurtunity for the rest of the film because whats scarier one killer chasing you or two!

Overall I thought the movie was pretty good; it just suffered on some of the actual horror elements and played on the comedy a little too much. They really could of made a good scary movie with all these new rules but only got half way there. The original cast really should have bit the dust by now but after scream 2 was released; i guess there was a backlash of angry fans complaining Jamie Kennedy,s character Randy died; so the writers are afraid of making any other kind of backlashes. They also had ideas for more sequels following this one but with the poor box office last weekend-who knows? Honesty i think April was a bad time of the year to release a movie like this; October would have been way better. I hope they continue to make these films as a fan but hopefully make them scarier.
